Who lives in there?

Deep under an old and long dead apple tree there is a hole, a hole where some creature lives and the location is proving a serious attraction to the two Jack Russell Terriers. So great is the attraction and the potential for me having to perform a spade and digging rescue that they both have to go on the lead before we get there and stay on the lead until we are well past the point of interest.
The hole down in the roots isn't worn enough for rabbits to be living there and there are no droppings and it is too small for foxes so we think it is a bolt hole for the Jack Russell's arch enemy the rat.
No doubt in the coming weeks there will be a reckoning but until then I have to be content with the two terriers trying to dislocate my shoulder or elbow as we go past.
