The marching scarecrow

The Barley has been drilled and as it germinates the farmer awaits the onslaught of flocks of hundreds of hungry pigeons. So far so good, there's just the odd one landing on the three drilled and rolled fields but they'll turn up. They always do. This year he's ready with what appears to be a somewhat military scarecrow marching towards his sentry duty position with a Sergeant Major's arm swinging stride. There you are all present and correct. However, early this morning the the scarecrow had a fan, a Tawny Owl was perched on its head using the scarecrow as a vantage point to watch out for breakfast to show up. A multi-tasking scarecrow, brilliant, and if the owl is there tomorrow I'll try and get a photograph.

Prints on the Fen

I haven't posted anything on my prints for years so I decided rectify that with my new project. To keep it short I'm illustrating a book for The Medlar Press a book that's been beautifully written by my good friend Gareth Craddock. There's fishing for pike, tench, perch, bass, re-discovering life, countryside, shooting, country people, a little history and coal mining.The linocuts inside the book will all be in monochrome but the cover has twelve printings in colour on it and I think I produced ten separate prints for the finished edition. The location is the forgotten Kentish Fenland with a nod to the South Wales coalfield, the book will be published in the Autumn so order early for Christmas! Early flowers early?

An early walk during the week and the portents seem to be suggesting that a little rain is on the way, and from the look of the early sky it may well with Lucie and I giving us a soaking before we get home. On our way round one of the orchards the early plum blossom was still in flower on some of the more sheltered trees and pair blossom was just starting to show up although there was masses of leaf on the trees in the pear aisles the blossom has yet to reach its peak. It seems to be an early arrival to me but the Cowslips on the headlands and dyke sides are beginning to reluctantly appear but strangely in the orchards where there is a real abundance of these lovely little flowers nothing is showing as yet.The appearance of these little flowers always means Spring to me but whatever the vagaries of their arrival time I'm sure Mother Nature has it all worked out. Somehow it's still hanging on

Amongst all of the apple trees in the orchard I can only find one plucky apple hanging on from last years crop. A Gplden delicious that has some how survived the frost wind, gales rain and everything that that the weather and wildlife can throw at it. You could definitely say that it's a really plucky effort and this evening I'll see if it's still there, the apple is a bit of a celebrity survivor now and a landmark on the walks.
