I told them

I told them autumn was in the air the other day but nobody listened and here's yet another hint of the cooler days to come.
We discovered the very first field mushroom of the season while we were walking the two Jack Russells. It was in a corner of the orchard and was growing right on the edge of a bed of nettles. We were very lucky that it hadn't been bombed by apple windfalls; if it had been that would have been the end of it for culinary purposes.
The first field mushroom of the season now awaits its fate at breakfast tomorrow, along with an egg, smoked bacon and black pudding.
      We'll look forward to that.

  1. Yeah OK, I admit you were right. I found some field mushrooms on Saturday, despite having only the lightest bit of rain. This week should see loads of them. I love collecting them every bit as much as eating them. I've got one particular field that produces puffballs as big as your head.

  2. We used to see Puffballs like that in Wales, they were huge. I believe you can eat them too but I haven't plucked up the courage…

    1. Another one of my neuroses. I have blind faith in what Mr. Supermarket serves me up in the obligatory browm plastic container reervdd for shrooms. but woukd never eat one from a field....

  3. Yeah, they're good to eat. Taste a bit like normal field mushrooms.

  4. I love a puffball TT - stuffed or fried in the normal shroom way, delicious. One year on my way home I spied a whopper at the top of the field. Horn blasts from irate motorists as I swerved into the gateway, trudge up the field....salivating at the thought of getting stuck into it.....bloody Tesco carrier bag! Bastards! TTFN Dickie

  5. That's the type of thing that happens to me Dickie ! Went out after all that rain yesterday and not a mushroom to be seen. Very odd.
