Beautifully carved into the brickwork on the front of the house we have an arrow and a horizontal line about three feet up from ground level. Just a little bit Sherlock Holmes you might say!
What is it? What does it mean? Are we ex-War Department? Is it sea level? Is it an OS Trig. point? has the house escaped from prison? Is it pointing to something?
Questions and yet more questions and the answer is elementary we're sure. The only certainty is that we just don't know. All the same it's a really nice bit of beautifully incised, crisp chisel work by an anonymous Victorian stonemason.
No laser cutters available in those days, just a mallet and chisel.
