Burnet, Ermine and Tiger

They sound a bit like a sixties 'Super Group' and in some cases the clothes are just as eccentric. Pretty well all moths get a bad press too. We've all heard of mothballs but who has heard of butterflyballs? The Butterfly Ball, maybe but over the summer we've both grown progressively more attracted to the humble and often ignored moth. Some have brilliant camouflage and others take a more lateral approach to defending themselves and the results are startling.

Butterflies are a bit flighty, a bit of a tease, just as the camera is on them they're off. Moths will pose shuffle and show you their best side, splendid it is too and then crawl up your hand and go to sleep.

I picked a large moth off the white wall at the back of the house, placed it on a log and shouted the Boss to come and have a look at it, the camouflage was so good we couldn't find it again. Look a little harder at the humble moth and prepare to be amazed.
      Roll on dusk!
