You are cleared for take-off

The swifts and house martins have gone, in fact the house martins that nest on the back of the house came and went very quickly because their nest building material, mud, was unavailable.
The sunny and dry start to the summer rapidly became a drought leaving them no raw material and huge cracks in the wheat and vegetable fields. Cracks that are still there despite the rain.

Meanwhile the swallows continue their migration south in little squadrons of  four or five, to somewhere in Central Africa. It must be damned hard work when you only weigh a few grammes and you're flying into the headwinds blowing from the south. No external fuel tanks for these little fellows, just eat on the wing and follow the urge for another three or four thousand miles.
Good luck, we'll be watching out for you next April.
