The heart of the matter

It's the ninth of November and we're picking artichokes. Weird weather, global warming or what? No, just plain lucky as far as we are concerned. One of our farmer friends was picking fresh strawberries last week, not a lot of them, but he reckoned he was lucky too. Another of Mother Nature's little bonuses.
The artichokes were only planted in the long border in early summer and we didn't expect a delicious meal so soon, next year yes, but not now, and if the weather stays mild we should get another meal too, brilliant! The idea was that next year we would eat some of the crop and leave other heads to go to seed for the finches to raid in the winter.
Anyway we've come to a compromise, we will leave a couple to go to seed so that the finches can have an hors d'oeuvre during the winter, and we'll have even bigger plants next year. Perfect!
