Well they're not magic mushrooms but they do have a strange magical fascination and beauty. These fungi plus many other varieties, were all growing in orchards so maybe they are specific to that particular environment, we think more research is needed. Other varieties seem slightly dull, just as these do, until you get up close and the another world is revealed.
The field mushrooms, not pictured, that we have been gathering in the orchards do look good, particularly with eggs and bacon, but despite the mild autumn that is another foraging crop that has come to an end.
To finish with a question: the majority of these fungi are very poisonous yet something eats its way through them? Perhaps a gentle reminder not to go into the orchards at night...
