The monster sundial

The boss spotted this well preserved and fashionably large sundial from the turret while we were out on patrol and what a statement it makes.
It's certainly a case of mine is bigger than yours and I've hung it on the gable end just in case there's any doubt.
We stood and looked at it for quite a while trying to work out how it works. We decided that obviously you need sun to really see just how it works so we've decided to revisit it on the next sunny day.
When that day arrives we can synchronise sundials and see if it's been adjusted for daylight saving time, then we'll have to check again when the clocks go forward. Maybe if you have a sundial you don't worry about things like that and just get on with your life.
Perhaps in the depths of midwinter you're more worried about where the next ray of sunlight is going to come from so you can read your sundial.
But does time stand still if there's no sunlight?
