Taking the bull by the horn

Just what are these two lovely little Fresian cattle doing and just why would someone carve them in relief and put them over their front door all those years ago?
The beast on the mound on the right looks a little, shall we say, excited, while the one on the left looks as if she is spurning his advances. The result being a 'staring out' contest of around one hundred and seventy years or so. We've heard of the hundred yard stare but the hundred year stare? That certainly redefines taking a long hard look but we'd be happy to have them over our front door watching over the threshold.
Bizarrely they look a little like the preliminary sketches for Shaun the Sheep.
