We were on our way to buy frozen roach and frozen gold sprats to use as bait for a pike fishing expedition when we glanced up and saw the light.
Yet another lovely bit of detailing tucked away in the apex of a building, this time a Methodist Chapel that is still in use. The blind arch above the arched doorway is a particularly subtle touch and as always the typeface is a joy to behold; a little Victorian and a lot of Edwardian influences.
No boring rectangular panels for this stonemason, it looks as if he indulged his skills and had some work-time fun.
It's a smart bit of bricklaying too.
We do wonder if the bricklayer looked at it, sucked air in through his teeth and muttered 'bloody stonemason, I told him I wanted it square. Anyway it'll cost extra cutting that shape into the brickwork.'
