Vacant tree house

We saw this thrush's nest abandoned in an alder hedge and the sight of it started a debate about why some birds re-use their nests and others don't.
Rooks and woodpeckers do as well as our house martins so why doesn't a thrush re-use a construction as sound and well made as this? Maybe in an area of denser growth the old nests are utilised by mice and other creatures as home improvement projects for the hibernation season.
There obviously isn't a bird housing shortage!
