This year the dykes and drains have enough water in them for the frogs and toads to enjoy a nice damp, romantic honeymoon. The production of spawn has been fantastic with great clouds of spawn on the weeds and drain bottoms.
It's not all amphibious pleasure though because whilst they enjoy themselves and scoff the plentiful food they in turn become part of the food chain; most notably for that grey killer the heron and then the crows, magpies and rats. Never mind the pike, perch and other fish; then there are the roads to cross too.
Who said the path of true love is seldom smooth?
Well whoever they were, they were right.
