We found this strange and primitive image on the stone floor of our local church. We think it represents a Heron but it could be an Egret or perhaps a Bittern. Our money is on a Heron though because there must of been such good fishing for them when Fenland really was a Fen with masses of water and lonely swamps teeming with fish and eels.
Sadly the brass is long gone but the studs that held the brass in place remain in the stone and below is a space with a stud where a latin description must have been.
Despite the fact that the brass is missing the ghost image is still strangely compelling and we like it just as it is.
