We've spotted a pair of Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers at work on a partially hollow plum tree in one of the orchards.
They're working away on their dream home and a very neat bit of pecking work it is, you can hear their hammer drill hundreds of yards away as they carve the portico into the hard fruit wood.
There is obviously going to be a high level, penthouse entrance under the fungi arch and this hole is away from the prevailing wind. The lower, but brand new entrance, is still a work in progress.
The building work continues apace before the really cold weather sets in, they were even dragging dry grass into the upper entrance the other morning.
