The Bramley apple trees in this particular orchard have been given a good, close crewcut. The pruning regime may look somewhat strange but, despite this, every autumn there is a colossal crop of apples that make their way to the supermarkets.
We assume that industrial style pruning is needed for the industrial scale of production but in the orchards we are familiar with the pruning is a little more artistic and based on hand, eye and experience.
We'll see what these trees look like when the blossom bursts and report back.
