Just for a change here's a little bit of Victorian hyperbole or maybe it's really a Victorian 'mission statement', perish the thought.
This is a commemorative plaque that once adorned the facade of a pumping station in the Fens and it reads as follows.
In fitness for the urgent hour,
Unlimited, untiring power,
Precision, promtitude, command,
The infant's will, the giant's hand;
Steam, mighty steam, ascends the throne,
And reigns lord paramount alone.
There's nothing quite like showing the world how impressed and pleased you are with the power of your brand new steam pump in a shy, reserved and understated way.
If you've got a great big steam pump there's no point in being modest.
