This is the first forkful of a new crop which is always the best one.
One turn of the fork and hey presto, enough delicious new potatoes for a meal. Last year the ground was sticky and heavy because of the wet weather with each potato bringing an almost equal weight of soil clinging to the tuber. This year it's all change, a lovely clean crop that can be prepared by hand with no kitchen implements required.
However the ground is very dry and some gentle, steady rain is needed. All of which goes to prove that you just can't win with the British weather.
Please pass the butter, salt and black pepper, thank you.
Now for the first tasting.
