A stolen couple of hours on a Fenland drain and in the same area as Saturday's debacle too. Although the conditions looked perfect and there were some Pike chasing small silverfish a run was very, very hard to come by.
Finally, just as the sky began to darken towards evening, the float smashed down and the take scattered small Roach and Rudd over an area of two or three square yards of the calm water. A fight ensued where the float never surfaced until the Pike was ready for the net and in came this beauty, a truly beautifully marked and very plump fish. One take and one Pike, that works for me.
Eighteen pounds six ounces on my scales so I am more than pleased with the first Pike of the new year.
Time for a beer. Or even two.
