Gathering winter fuel

We were out walking the two terriers on a warm and sultry afternoon and in one of the orchards we pass through the farmer was tidying last winters gale damage.
When is the best time to prepare for winter? The summer obviously and none of the dead wood from the plum trees was being wasted; neatly cut ready for stacking and in turn, ready for the cold winter that we must get this year. We walk on whilst the circular saw powered by the little Ferguson tractor kept working into the evening cutting green and dead wood into logs and kindling.
      Preparation with nothing wasted, perfect.
