Black ties in the village

While we were walking round the village with the two Jack Russells, we started noticing building ties holding and bracing houses and cottages. In deepest Fenland we suppose they were to stabilise the houses against subsidence and not just for decoration.
It is incredible how many variations there are on a simple theme: hooks, plates, bars, crosses; God bless the blacksmiths and their metal signatures perhaps.
We love the one at the top that looks as if it had a previous life as a hanger of something or maybe someone...
