The March calendar offering from the Beggarstaff Brothers and we reckon that this is the best of all of the twelve monthly woodcuts. Red and orange too as the extra colours, they are really cutting loose! Those boys really could represent horses on woodcuts, we think they must have spent some time at the races or simply had a real love for the animals.
Judging by the rhyme or doggerel below that goes with the woodcut they obviously weren't betting men so maybe their pleasure came from just looking at the thoroughbreds and not from the wager.
April will give us the final calendar illustration and then perhaps we should get them framed and enjoy the group of twelve as a mini-exhibition.
