It was June 21st yesterday and that marks the traditional end of our short but very sweet asparagus season. Oh bugger.
The supermarkets will still be selling 'fresh' asparagus grown somewhere that involves it being brought to us in the hold of a Boeing 747 but the glorious local asparagus is now finished.
The plants in their long beds will be left to grow into ferns and gather strength for next year. Meanwhile our farmer friend is extending his personal asparagus bed to more than double the area, so three years from now we'll be able to have a really good guzzle on the new crop of 'Purple Passion' from the extended bed.
Unfortunately the bed might well be longer but the season will not be.
Same with lots of stuff, the brevity of it makes it more special. Having my daily intake of strawberries at this very moment. Got to before you're limited to tasteless year round mush from supermarket.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy them while you can.
This Is The End.......my favourite Doors track I think.
Bang on Scribbler, on all fronts. I saw the Doors at The Round House in 1968, I think it was '68. A double bill with Jefferson Airplane. What a night...
ReplyDeleteYou lucky sod !
ReplyDeleteWe were great concert goers. The Grateful dead, The Byrds, The Mothers of Invention, The Band, Cream, Blue Cheer, Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band, The Bonzos and many more. Happy days, John
ReplyDeleteWow! Asparagus to The Doors at The Round House in one move.....amazing! You are one very lucky man TT! Great track The End, but LA Woman album blew me away in my teens (not in 1971!!!!!) - same with the elderflower........get brewing while you can! TTFN, Dickie
ReplyDeleteIt was Strange Days for me, I still have it on imported vinyl somewhere but that sound track on Apocalypse now is really in the mood of the time. Lived on the edge of Brixton when it was not fashionable and the West Indian music was great too, a bit of a hash haze in the room though!
ReplyDeleteIt used to be The Roundhouse and Middle Earth on Saturday nights. Then those bands became more mainstream and The Royal Albert Hall and The Empire Pool Wembley became a venue. As I said, like happy days man. Then there was the whole British Blues scene too. ATB, John
I said to someone the other day that I always associate The End with Vietnam, after watching Apocalypse Now. The black night, fires burning and that track playing. Beefheart eh, bet that was an eye ( and ear ) opener !
ReplyDeleteOne of the Boss' favourite albums is Safe as Milk. I think he died a couple of years ago but I'm not sure. Everything was loud then, no wonder I've got tinnitus! John
ReplyDeleteDaze of future past there chaps. Love the big fern fronds of asparagus.
ReplyDeleteAnd now The Moody Blues. What are we taking?
