Another mug

In this case it's another christening mug and it just happens to be a very fine hand painted example too. This example is celebrating and commemorating the christening of master Joseph Root 1855, in which month we do not know, but the Suffolk family must have been 'moneyed' to afford a hand painted mug to commemorate the great family occasion.
Whoever the the ceramicist was he was certainly a talented calligrapher and his use of the brush with there gold glaze is quite beautiful.
Meanwhile was he related to the England bowler or even Henry Root? Who knows? We reckon we should simply enjoy them for what they are, a lovely piece of social history from a bygone age.
