No doubt the name on the foundation stone is that of a local person of money, standing, power and a peerless reputation, well you'd have to be to get your name on a foundation stone in 1875. Whenever we see these stones and carved lettering on buildings around Fenland, and the rest of British Isles for that matter, you can't help but wonder who these people were, what they did for a living and what they looked like.
In this case we reckon that it was the incumbent preacher complete with sideburns, a ruddy complexion and a music case full of hellfire and brimstone sermons.
They could have spent a little more on the incised lettering but perhaps austerity was a line that was religiously followed by the Baptists.
