Class on the floor

We do love these old memorial stones that you find set into the floor of church knaves and passage ways. Apart from the elegance of the incised letterforms themselves there is so much social history embedded in the few words on this piece of slate in the church at Walberswick in Suffolk.
We may chunter on about the National Health Service and politicians meddling but those two children would most certainly have survived in the twenty first century. We reckon that the early eighteenth century was well before the 'good old days' had actually arrived and it must have been a hard slog to survive even for a 'gentleman of this parish'.
However this six foot by four foot piece of slate is a proper memorial, very classy indeed.
