In the skies above the house there have been lots of House Martins and Swallows feeding furiously on the disturbed insects as the last of the spring wheat was being harvested. Flocks of twenty to forty have been passing through, pausing for a feed, and then disappearing as quickly as they arrived.
Before moving on they seem to pause on the wires to let their food digest then they're gone, cleared for take-off and heading for the warmth of West Africa.
Strangely the passage of the Swifts seems to be over, one evening they were here twittering around the sky and now they've simply gone with no sighting of any other birds to be seen in transit moving south.
Safe travelling little birds, see you next year around April 20th.
It's the swifts I miss most.
ReplyDeleteThey're long gone sadly, but there are still odd small flocks of swallows passing through but only in groups of five or six.
