Quince leafing up

Slowly but surely the fruit trees in the orchard are beginning to stir themselves into visible action. The pear trees are beginning to bud but the quince rootstock is ahead of the main Comice Pear tree shooting out from the base of the main tree.
This was last week in the wind, rain and cold so now that we finally have some warm and sunny weather there will be an explosion of growth on the trees and at ground level too. As a harbinger of late spring and early summer I heard a cuckoo this morning while walking the two terriers and on the return leg I saw the first of the swallows. The swallows have arrived three days earlier because it was April 21 when they appeared last year.
The seasons are changing and gathering pace. The time of plenty approaches.
