Golden days, golden plums

Now here's a little indulgence, the first of the Laxton's Early Plums have matured and there's a heightened level of temptation to pick and eat three or four of them every time that I walk the two Jack Russell Terriers through the orchard.
First thing in the morning the plums are deliciously cool and refreshing but by the time early evening arrives because of the daytime temperatures they're a little like they've been warmed in the oven. This crop won't last long, a week at the most, in fact when I pick a small bag to take home I keep them in the top of the refrigerator.
They're all part of the season of plenty and the first of the orchard fruit to be ready. They'll be followed by more varieties of plum: Tsar, Victoria, Burbank Giant Prune, Marjorie Seedling and the rootstock Bullace.
Just what the doctor ordered and I'm looking forward to it, no thermometers or rubber gloves.
