Bright sunshine, winds strengthening and charity

Sunday morning and fifteen anglers assembled for a charity pike match to raise some money towards the purchase of a new minibus to transport disabled children out into the countryside, to the seaside or anywhere that improves the quality of their lives. A good cause in every respect.
We assembled at 09.00 had a good natter, enjoyed bacon rolls and coffee, then we drew our peg numbers; between between peg 1 and 6 was a good draw and 7 and 15 ranging from not so good to hopeless. I drew peg 8 on top of a high bank with a twelve foot drop down to the drain and then four feet of reeds to the water's edge, loose your footing, slip in and you are wet up to your armpits.
Then you've got to get out of the water and up the bank, that's where the cabaret really would really begin.

Peg number 8 was a swim on a stretch of water that I would normally walk past because of the difficulties of fishing it but now I had no choice so it was a case of just get on with it. There was an old scaffolding pole mooring to the right with no floor and totally overgrown with Norfolk Reed, it didn't need 'keep off, dangerous' written on it. The bright sunlight and the steadily increasing wind did not fill me with optimism, just look at the reeds bending on the opposite bank.

Within five minutes I had caught a four pound pike then swiftly lost another, it may have been an awkward place to fish but there were obviously fish there that liked a drifted dead roach despite the bright sunshine and strengthening wind. By mid-afternoon I had caught six pike with a total weight of 24lb 2oz, lost two at the net because of the awkward environment and dropped a further three that simply let go of the bait and the last fish that I caught was the heaviest at 8lb 10oz,
The winner had over twenty eight pounds of pike and a grand total of 153lb 8oz of fish were caught and all of them safely returned. Nine anglers caught fish with six returning a blank but most importantly a goodly sum of money, almost £500.00, was raised towards the handicapped children's minibus and a great time was had by everyone.
Next year we are all going to convene for another 'fish for charity' competition.

  3. Thanks Stephen, at water level it would have been easier and I would;s, possibly, have caught more but that wind made control pretty well impossible. It was still a good day though. John

  5. Thanks George, Our weather is ridiculous, no rain for nearly four weeks and the drains are clear and coupled with bright sunshine I'm going to forego today. Rain, cloud and a little rain please weathermen,, still the farmers are really busy. this season I haen't got out as much as I would have liked, Sue's mum lives with us and she is 101 next month so we are her carers, somewhat time consuming to say the least! Good to hear from you, regards, John
