The first blossom has appeared in the orchard and it's way ahead of all the other fruit trees, it is in fact growing from the rootstock of a very dead and very old Laxton's Early plum tree.
I met the farmer when I was out walking the two terriers and asked what the rootstock was and he said that the trees were planted by his grandfather long before he was born. However he was pretty well convinced that the rootstock used for the grafting of the plum tree would be from the Prunus family and that would tie in with all the Prunus that is flowering now. It will be interesting to see if there is any fruit yield from the rootstock and if there is it will show well before July with this early blossoming.
Spring is coming.
Last week motoring home to CT from FL, the daffodils were out, at the rest stop in GA. Arriving home, we were greeted by ten inches of snow, the next day. Snow is still around but today will be warm (46 deg F). March sun feels warm. Spring is coming. Hoorah!
ReplyDeleteJohn, Florida then driving north, that must have been a journey through climate and seasons. We've got freezing cold winds and more rain promised. We had 29mm at the weekend all driven on a cold, cold lazy wind. Spring is coming. regards, John
