The way we were

We found a collection of old postcards of the village and the neighbouring area and in some cases they seem to go back  as far the late nineteenth century, amazing that even then photographers were photographing local scenes as a social record and maybe as a record of what they viewed as a rapidly changing world.

The old windmill at the top identifies the view as looking roughly north towards Outwell from Upwell, the mill with its lovely sails has gone but I think the shell of the building is now a home and the surrounding area is all houses. Then a photograph of a barge towing a boat but heading in the opposite direction, I think the photograph was taken from the bridge in Upwell.

Finally a postcard where the same windmill is visible in the distance but with a lot more buildings having been built. The old shop of Spikings Butchers, whose business finally moved to the opposite side of the river and I think that the new premises would be situated in the end of the row of houses in the distance beyond the two boats. The business closed in 2017 and now only two butchers remain in the village.
John Spikings made fantastic sausages too, I miss those sausages.
