Pretty well north and south

The Great Ouse Relief Channel, another massive drain to protect West Norfolk from flooding. These two photographs were taken from from the road bridge at Stowbridge. That is a mighty stretch of water 200 yards wide and very, very deep in the middle; definitely life-jacket fishing even from the bank.
At the top the view south towards Downham Market road bridge and Heygates' flour mill, I believe that part of this stretch used to be called the 'Golden Mile' in the heyday of match fishing on this waterway because of the massive bags of bream that were regularly caught. Now I never see anybody fishing for any species but there must be some really good predator fishing, if you can find them and the boat in the distance is a 72 foot narrowboat just to give a sense of scale.
Below, the northerly view looking towards Saddle Bow and King's Lynn, if you enjoy solitary and lonely fishing this is one of the best places in east Anglia.

  1. That is bleak stretch of water. To fish that I would need a lunatic dedication to learn the water. A frightening stretch of water. John

  2. I used to stop and look at this water years ago when i fished the Fens and often wondered if i should brave it and wet a line, always bottled it though and fished somewhere easier. Maybe i,ll have a try soon as feeling the itch to head Fenward again to chase the predators....

  3. We drove over the bridge this morning and forbidding didn't come into it. Blowing a gale straight along the channel, huge waves and pouring with rain. A brolly wouldn't be much good in those conditions. All the best, John
