Late summer and it's orange

The field in front of the house seems to have suddenly turned orange. Last week three workers took two days cutting back all of the leaves on the plants so that the crop looked like two fields of large green footballs. Now, with the sun and the accompanying very high temperatures, it's just a sea of large orange footballs as the fruit changes colour and ripens.
Where will they all go? The pumpkins have been carefully weeded and farmed and treated as a premium crop so our guess is that they are heading for the food industry, they look about as perfect as they can be so I don't see them heading down the Halloween route to be carved up.
When they're harvesting them I'll ask the farmer what their final destination is. There's nothing like getting the answers to clear up a mystery.

  1. Were they weeded and cleared by hand?

  2. Neil, They certainly were. There's an earlier post about them on July 17. Hard work. John
