Parasites and opportunists

It's over a week since the two Jack Russell Terriers and I last enjoyed the pleasure of a sunny morning out on the early walk, for the last week or so the weather has been grey and damp and if it hasn't been damp it's been absolutely pouring down. The ground is so wet that it is more of a squelch than a walk.

The appearance of the overgrown orchard has changed completely, barring the odd apple that winds and the rain have left hanging all of the the fruit is now down on the ground being scavenged by the birds, small rodents and foxes. Now the only thing growing on the trees is lichen, some of it quite beautiful, and opportunist grasses and moss growing in and on the old stumps.

Thankfully there's still the odd small splash of that lovely heritage colour Norfolk Bog Door Blue to be seen on old stumps and cut branches, it's a real multi-use paint if ever there was one.
The terriers go about their business; hunting, questing, digging, peeing, scenting and being absorbed by anything in the undergrowth. Even Barney who is now in his twelfth year carries on as if he's half his age, although he is marginally slower these days.
