Washes awash

The Welney Wash road had been closed for a few weeks but earlier this week the Boss and I drove a dry road on our way to Littleport. How long the road will stay like this who who knows, water was running over the road in some places but that was being driven along by the wind and quite shallow although there were some deep pools because of the adverse camber.
The Hundred Foot was running out with the tide but the River Delph was full of water coming off the washes and was very high and pounding through the bridge pool. The difference between winter and summer on this stretch is quite unbelievable. You can see the Bankside reeds are now in the middle of the waterway and the embankment road is covered, needless to say the river spreads through the trees on the right and on over the washes to the Welney Wetland sanctuary that is home to all the swans, geese and thousands of other migratory waterbirds I couldn't name.

The Old Bedford, well the Old Bedford was quite happy being at a pretty normal level and I even saw a pike or perch chasing the bait fish. Despite the position of the cottages near the water I still think what a great place place to live if you are an angler.
We've got more wind and rain this week so no doubt the road will be closed again and the water will continue to fill the system, it'll be like this throughout the winter if the weather keeps up its current behaviour.
