Water, water everywhere

Yesterday the water being pumped through this eight inch pipe was a positive torrent, the water was being hurled four or five feet out into the main drain in a brown stream and the source of the water was the maze of dykes that drain the fields on one side of the drain.
The water from the dyke is lifted by pump and deposited in the main to continue its journey to the sea but there must be millions of gallons to working their way to the drain from the dykes and on onwards to the main drain. All of the dyke networks on both sides of the drain were pushing water out into the main drain, some from a height and others making the waters boil and foam something terrible. Meanwhile the run-off on the main drain was somewhat fast, a bit like a tidal stretch of river in spate.
The farmers are praying for no more rain for a week or two so that things can get back to 'normal', whatever that is. Then there's the howling wind that seems to be with us most of the time too.
It's 06.25 on Friday morning and the rain is pouring down. Not back to 'normal' then.
