Early on Friday morning, when I was out walking the two terriers, I met the farmer and we had a socially distanced conversation from one grove of fruit trees to another, at least nine feet between us for the information of the powers that be.
Before I turned up he was studying the blossom that has appeared on the plum trees and he called it 'oddly blossom'. Apparently it's called 'oddly blossom' because there are odd clumps here and then a gap and an odd clump there. A perfectly logical description when you think about it. Last year's crop on all the plum trees was absolutely massive with branches smothered with blossom and then snapping under the weight of fruit, particularly after rain with the added weight of the water.
His final biological reasoning was that the trees are having a rest because they're knackered from their efforts last year and things will get back to normal next year.
You can't argue with that scientific logic either, however we are reassured that there will be plenty of fruit for jam-making and picking as I walk the dogs in summer.
Looks similar on my Victoria plum. Not a bad crop last year. But all the rain and constantly wet soil might well have overloaded them!
ReplyDeleteLast year the crop was incredible but our farmer friend says a thin year this year. Enough for the grower plus a little. John
