Here's a real morale booster if ever there was one, the beautiful, tasty and delicious spears of purple sprouting asparagus have just appeared above the ground. Oh, the excitement at the prospect of the first picking of the season.
The first few spears will be cut and disposed of to get the plants up to speed and then away we go for the seasonal feast. Hopefully we'll get a little more rain to soften the ground and make cutting easier and perhaps the asparagus spears a little more succulent but the anticipation for the weekend.
I'm going to have to go and sit in a cool dark place I'm so excited. Now what wine can we enjoy with the first picking. In a lockdown this really is something to look forward too.
Hi John
ReplyDeleteFresh home grown asparagus is one of the foods of the gods!
We got our first picking of the year from my Dad's allotment at weekend. There was enough for three meals so we had the first batch steamed with rib steak, 2nd steamed with sea bass then the last batch as asparagus tarts! It is a delicious vegetable the only issue is the smell the next day!
Take care and stay safe....
Alistair
ReplyDeleteWonderful stuff. The Boss likes it as soldiers with a boiled egg or with a duck egg. I like bitter and black pepper or an omelette with the tips. Fantastic. ATB, stay safe, John
