Where do they come from?

This year we've had an infestation of poppies and I must say we can happily live with that, the colours are wonderful. There have been yellow ones, white ones, mauve ones, strange scraggy red ones and traditional red poppies. We haven't planted any of them but they're entirely welcome to any part of the garden they choose to colonise, in fact the plan is to just let them seed on when the heads mature.
Meanwhile they continue to colonise the verges and hedges

We did begin to wonder if we had any opium poppies amongst them, I know that they are grown in parts of England, they must be grown for the pharmaceutical industry but I wouldn't know really. Anyway I don't see West Norfolk becoming an area called 'Little Afghanistan' any time soon so we'll just enjoy them for what they are, mother nature's version of paper flowers. And every nice they are too.
