Location, location, location

Our neighbour the retired farmer decided to restore an old and very much vintage orchard spray during the first lockdown, it had stood unused and unwanted for a great many decades and with a tank clean out and new seals it worked like clockwork behind his restored Ferguson tractor. After its first use in years the old sprayer was parked-up in an open barn prior to cleaning it and winterising it before the bad weather sets in, so it sheltered there all of the summer.

When we went to move the sprayer there was a surprise, we found a rather splendid example of avian home-building and engineering in what was a built-in toolbox. A pair of wrens had decided to build their home in the open toolbox compartment so their nest was perfectly under cover, complete with solid foundations and as safe as houses. They obviously reared their brood successfully and no predators had damaged the nest. The smallest British bird and obviously very industrious, I hope they manage to survive the winter and do the same next year and there's even room for an extension.
