Winter arrives, well kind of

It's 6.30am on Friday morning and it's pitch dark and steadily pouring with rain but by the time I've made two mugs of tea and opened the back door to let the terriers in there's a blizzard whirling and swirling around the house. Where did that come from? We haven't seen snow like this since winter 2010/2011 and no doubt all of this fall will have thawed away by this evening because rain is promised this afternoon and evening.

The first mug of tea is rapidly swigged back and then just one more for inner warmth, and by now it's daylight and time for the walk. Lucie has never seen snow like this and her excitement is a pleasure to see, snowflakes are there to be chased, caught and bitten.
Barney, being ten and a half years older has seen it all before and just seems weary at the prospect of a walk anywhere in these weather conditions, although luckily for him he does have a double layer of very dense coat so he'll be warm enough.

My fingers are so cold that taking photographs on my iphone is a chore so two miles or so later we head for home and a fresh coffee for me and a biscuit for the terriers, well they enjoy a treat too. The terriers are in such a hurry that a diversion through one of the orchards is of absolutely no interest at all, it's just a case of home James and don't spare the horses.
      I wonder why?
