Deserting the nest

It's a tough life for ground nesting birds, one false move and you can easily be another animal's lunch, dinner or supper. I found this cluster of eggs on a piece of overgrown ground that the terriers love rooting around on. The terriers weren't curious about the eggs at all and having laid there since last spring through the summer, autumn and winter no doubt they are giving off smells that the terriers can smell but fortunately I can't.

Normally they'd be a lovely shade of brown, a bit like the froth on coffee but the weather has bleached all the coloured pigment out of them. What persuaded the parent pheasants to desert the nest and leave home we'll never know but I'm amazed that the Magpies and Crows didn't discover them let alone the foxes or rats. Now the nesting season is almost upon us again and I hope they enjoy better luck with their homebuilding and parenting this year.
