Rootstock blossom

The old Tsar plum tree died years ago and the trunk and branches have pretty well collapsed, that's the stump that you can see on the left, but the Prunus root-stock that the original Tsar tree was grafted onto is going from strength to strength.

Each year it's the first blossom to appear in the orchard but it doesn't provide any fruit, what it does provides a happy harvesting ground for the early bees. Some are big fat bumble bees lumbering around and others look like worker bees from a hive somewhere. In the next couple of weeks the plum trees will blossom and provide the first display of blossom for real plum crop, I always think that this is the early 'cheer you up' blossmg before the real action starts.
